Account Assistant to Account Takeover

Don Whiting, our Client Services Assistant has temporarily taken over Account Manager, Lorenda James' accounts until she returns from leave. Don has been with PWA since late October 2018 to assist our Account Managers and clients of everyday needs. Don's background includes several years of expertise as a COBRA Specialist and Benefit Care Representative while working for WageWorks in Phoenix, AZ.

Californians Could be Required to have Health Insurance Starting in 2020

Palm Springs Desert Sun (2/19/19)

Identical bills have been introduced in the California Senate and Assembly that would reinstate the individual mandate, requiring all Californians to have health insurance starting in 2020 or pay a tax penalty. The bills, introduced in late January and mid-February by the two chambers, are an attempt to reserve the revocation by Congress of the federal mandate that was part of the Affordable Care Act. Opponents of the mandate, including President Donald Trump, argued it was not fair to penalize someone for not having insurance. Supporters of the California bills say the insurance market will fall apart without the mandate.

FDA Chief: Federal Government Might Step in if States don't Change Lax Vaccine Laws

CNN (2/20/19)

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said federal health agencies may step in if states don't tighten laws on vaccine exemptions for children amid the ongoing measles outbreak but didn't specify the timeline and kind of federal action. "Some states are engaging in such wide exemptions that they're creating the opportunity for outbreaks on a scale that is going to have national implications," Gottlieb said.

Blue Shield of California Bronze PPO Plans Change

Blue Shield (3/2019)

Blue Shield of California Will change their Bronze PPO plans to have combined medical and pharmacy deductibles, effective Q3 2019 for new and renewing groups. The changes were required to meet DMHC mandates for meal level actuarial values and these plans now include combined medical and pharmacy deductibles.

Proposed Rule Released- U.S. Department of Labor White Collar Exemption and Overtime

After a period from 2015 to now with edicts from Presidents (past and present) final overtime rules published, injunction enjoined and invalidated the final published rules, silence, and nationwide listening sessions, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) yesterday (3.7.19) proposed to rescind the previously published rules and released its new proposed overtime rules with an effective date as of January 2020.

New Court Ruling on Association Health Plans

Association Health Plans allowed small businesses to band together for more affordable healthcare, and they have been a hot topic of late. after the Department of Labor under the Trump administration issued its final ruling on Association Health Plans (AHPs) last summer, several states took up issue with it. Specifically, eleven states and the District of Columbia sued the DOL, arguing that the broad availability of AHPs as outlined in the final rule goes against the consumer protections provided by the Affordable Care Act, and that the new regulation reflects a misinterpretation of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1984 (ERISA).
