High (specialty drug costs for treating some chronic conditions can be as high as $1 million annually for a single plan member) and rising specialty drug costs have become the most important health plan cost driver for many employer groups. The entry of these drugs into the marketplace has raised important economic, health, and ethical questions for all health plans.

California Governor Proposes Penalty to Fund Health Insurance Subsidies
California Healthline (6/3/19)
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has proposed imposing a tax penalty on people who fail to enroll in health insurance, with the proceeds going toward tax credits for an estimated 850,000 Californians, including some whose incomes are too high for federal assistance. The proposal is being debated by state lawmakers as part of budget negotiations, which should have been done by June 15th. Read More

REMINDER: PCORI Fees Due By July 31st, 2019

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) imposes a fee on insurers of certain fully insured plans and plan sponsors of certain self-funded plans to help fund the Patient-centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI).
The PCORI fee is due by July 31 of the year following the calendar year in which the plan or policy year ends. Employers who sponsor calendar year self-funded plans can celebrate-2019 is the last year that they will pay this fee. Read more here
IRS Releases 2020 HSA Contribution Limits and HDHP Deductible and Out-of-Pocket Limits

This alert is of interest to all employers that sponsor group health plans. Note that employers with “grandfathered” or “grandmothered” plans are not subject to the ACA out-of-pocket limits, although the HSA/HDHP rules still apply if the plan is an HSA-qualified HDHP. Read more here
HHS Proposes Revisions to ACA Section 1557 Regulations

At the end of May, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a proposed rule to revise regulations previously released under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The HHS goal with the proposed rule is to remove what the department views as redundancies and inconsistencies with other laws, as well as reduce confusion. Read more here

It's Gonna Be H.O.T. this Summer!
With the summer months here, fun and temperature are heating up. It's important to watch your hydration and body temperature levels to avoid heat strokes, dehydration, and heat exhaustion.
Here are some tips to keep cool during the summer:
Drink PLENTY of water! Carry a water bottle with you when you go outside, especially when you are doing activities.
Take breaks in shaded areas. The hotter it is, the more breaks you should have. It allows your body to cool off and is the perfect time to take a water break!
Wear loose or light-weight clothing. Allowing air to circulate will help keep you cool and comfortable.
